Automobile Roof Rack that can hold wheelchairs?

Wednesday Dec 3, 2008

Hi there,

I am looking to purchase a small hybrid car that does not have much trunk space. However, the one caveat is that I need to be able to transport a wheelchair. I do not want to put it in the backseat and it does not fit in the trunk. Does anyone know of any roof rack system that can be used for wheelchairs, similiar to bike racks? Thanks for any help!!

Dont get a roof rack, you need to get an outside wheelchair lift for this vehicle. There are several different options, they can either be electric or manual. In most cases they will be attached to the back of your car by a trailer hitch. If your car has a trunk you can get a wheelchair lift that is removable. Or you can have it put on a swing away arm so that you can get access to the trunk.

You may want to purchase a trailer hitch which is design for wheel chair, as long as you don't plan to tow anything else. Roof rack is not recommended. It is hard to left your wheel chair over the top of the roof. It can easily damage your car's paint job and your back. There are a lot of wind resistance when you place your wheel chair on top of a vehicle roof. Your gas mileage will diminshed. The wind will also damage and rip material off the wheel chair.
Good luck!

Roof rack that is made of steel will be stronger to take goods, in the other hand, it will be heavier. Roof rack that is made from aluminium will be lighter but it could not bring the heavy goods. For example, it could not bring more than one bicycle or other heavy sport equipments.

Besides that, you need to choose the roof rack that can be taken off from the car easily as it will give you profit when you want to change your car.
