Tuesday Feb 10, 2009

Spring Massive at 9600 feet in Breckenridge April 1-20.
End the season with twenty days of the best spring skiing and riding in Colorado, competitions, events, food, and the biggest concert line up in Spring Massive history featuring Robert Randolph, Grace Potter , Tony Furtado, The Rail Benders, The Subdudes, and Grammy winner Jo Dee Messina. See springmassive.com for all the details!
Four huge peaks with over 2350 acres of skiing and riding, five terrain parks, four half-pipes, two high-speed six passenger SuperChairs, a state-of-the-art children’s ski and snowboard school, unparalleled grooming, exciting events and a historic mining town with endless shopping, dining and nightlife. At 9600 feet, with over 300 days of sunshine and an average of 300 inches of snowfall per year, Breckenridge is the Perfect Mountain Town.

New last season, the perfect mountain town got a little more perfect with the addition of the BreckConnect, Breckenridge’s 8-passenger gondola. Setting the stage for the future development of Peaks 7&8, the gondola takes skiers, riders and visitors from town to the Peak 8 base area. Breckenridge also introduced SnowWhite - 150 acres of above tree line expert terrain accessed by the Imperial Express SuperChair, the highest chairlift in North America, reaching 12,840 feet.

From December to April, Breckenridge is packed with events including the Hartford Disabled Sports Ski Spectacular, US Snowboarding Grand Prix, Ullr Fest and the International Snow Sculpture Championships. The season wraps up with the 8th Annual Spring Massive Festival April 1-20, 2008 - a fusion of sport, music, family fun, incredible lodging specials and legendary spring conditions.

WildKat navigating Toronto in a wheelchair

Sunday Feb 8, 2009

I’m not sure why the sound isn’t working on this video, but I uploaded it anyway. It gives you an idea of how accessible Toronto is from downtown to the Eaton Center.

You’ll notice I didn’t have my guide dog with me here. She stayed at home with my guide/service dog in training and my boyfriend/camera guy was giving me directions. It seemed to work out well, but I wouldn’t want to do it on a busy day with a lot of people around.

A short history of Bicycles and Wheelchairs. Both forms of transport liberation are very ecological and do not harm the planet.

The music was released in 1936 by Mr Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra, it is titled “Mahogany Hall Stomp” (Williams, Bregman).

The oldest known European visual representation of a wheelchair comes from a woodcut by Hans Weiditz. It is dated 1531 and was published in Augsburg, Bavaria (now in modern Germany).

The first recorded use of a wheelchair in England was on January the 11th, 1672, when John Evelyn, a diarist contemporary of the notable Samuel Pepys, commented in his own diary on Lord Aubignie’s “wheele-chaire”.

John Evelyn, recorded in his entry of 11th of January, 1662 that:

“I dined this day at Arundell-house, where I heard excellent Musique, perform’d by the ablest Masters both French & Eng, on Theorba, Viols, Organs & Voices as an Exercise against the comming of the Queene, as purposly composd for her chapell &c: After which my Lord Aubignie (her Majesties Almoner to be) shewed us his elegant Lodging;& his wheele-chaire for Ease & motion, with divers other Curiosities,…….”
-

Stephan Farfler

After his death, Farfler’s vehicle went to the Municipal Library in Nuremberg, it later became the victim of allied bombs in January 1945.
