Paralympics… are they only for physically disabled people? What about Deaf people?
Posted by admin | Under disabled sports Monday Nov 3, 2008The reason for this question is… the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has several olympaids… the standard olympics for the general sporting community, and the paralympics for the physically disabled, the special olympics for people with learning difficulties, and so on.
If for instance the national Deaf Sports Association in this African country is now a member of CISS (International committee of Deaf Sports, I think) (deaflympics in common parlance) is facing obstacles from the national paralympic committee, who insist that the deaf association join the physically disabled and blind people in becoming members. the Deaf association insist on being separate as they are affliated with CISS. They do not see themselves as being eligible for the paralympics.
Can anyone knowledgeable about these (IOC) sporting issues help clarify the exact situation? Thanks
