COOL Mobility Prototype 3 Wheelchair

Wednesday Dec 3, 2008

This is a cool ’sports electric wheelchair’ weighing only 44kg or 103 lbs (including batteries), designed in Australia by Colin Johanson. It won the ABC TV “New Inventors” program “2006 Viewers Choice Award” and we are working on commercialisig it.

The video is worth the download to see the terrain that this amazing morphing electric wheelchair can negotiate, driven by Jonathan Jowers and filmed by Mark Duckworth, both of CATEA, Georgia Tech, Atlanta.

In the stretched outdooor mode it can even bounce up and down gutters. In the short indoor mode, it can negotiate really tight corridors and doorways. Check it out!

Version 2 used a …
Version 2 used a cut down and modified Quickie TNT and version 3 used a standard unmodified TiLite TRA. My design is a power unit that replaces the rear 24″ wheels with a three wheel power unit that should be adaptable to a number of sports chair designs. That way your sports chair can become a full joystick controlled power chair and revert to manual at any time by disconnecting from the power unit and plugging in 24″ wheels. See the COOL Mobility website for detail photos.

Batteries in this …
Batteries in this version are NiMH. Motors are prototype brushless rare earth prototype motors inside the hubs. Yes it uses a standard control system (5 x programs) or another prototype control (only one profile). Market for this will be aimed at under 100kg (200 lbs). It is not intended to be a chair for everyone - one chair can’t be suitable for all needs. This is aimed at a niche market who can handle its performance.

This looks …
This looks fantastic and a great idea for a large market of users. I work with power chairs and I could see our clients who would definately use this. Few questions…..what kind of batteries… what kind of motors… is it programmable… most of our chairs are 300+ lbs. I think this chair would gear more towards para’s. Again, awesome.

Top speed is …
Top speed is currently 10 kph (6 mph) (the legal limit), but driving the chair is very stable and cruising without problems or feeling of being on the edge. Camber puts a huge increase on any axle or gearbox so would not be wise or of much benefit. Our chair could be used in sports like tennis quite well as it turns really easily. Great vid of your tennis.

Hey man from …
Hey man from someone who has been in a power chair my whole life, awesome chair! I was just wondering what the top speed(or potential top speed) of your chair is and if you think you could adapt your design to make it like a manual sports chair, with camber, etc? As you can see from my video, I am playing wheelchair tennis in an “everyday” power wheelchair. Just curious if you thought your chair might be better, or could be adapted, to be better for a “sports” power chair.
