BTW, in the end it was decided that what was done to Ashley was in fact not according to law and the hospital did get reprimanded.
ETA: The previous answers are incorrect, a parent does not have absolute rights in terms of medical treatment for their children. The courts do. If a hospital and parent are in conflict about a course of medical treatment a judge will decide. There is some treatment, including sterilization of a minor that is not allowed without the approval of a court of law. Parents are also not allowed to refuse life saving treatment for their children based upon religious convictions if a hospital/doctor choosing to ask for a judicial opinion.
