What is needed to get a dog accepted as a therapy animal for a disabled person in te state of Texas?
Posted by admin | Under disabled person Tuesday Sep 30, 2008I am a disabled person that when I go out in public around a lot of people it can throw me into a panic attack, but when I have my little (21/2 lbs) I don't suffer near as bad .
If you use it in public for a specific function it is not considered a therapy dog — You are interested in a service dogs qualifications. If you want your pup to travel with you in public as a service dog you will need proof of your disability. CGC is a good place to start. I certify Service and Therapy dogs in Texas. I live in New York State, however I have many Blind and/or disabled friends who use Service animals.
I would call your local Disabilities office and ask them for their advice on how you could find training or help in training your dog for certification as a Therapy Animal.
There are certain points that your dog will have to learn and be able to pass certain testing before she would be certified as a Therapy animal to use with other disabled people.
I know what you mean about a dog or pet being able to calm you and make you feel secure. I have a Chow/Husky that I don't think I could live without. He isn't a Service animal but he is the best friend I've ever had and would die for Me if he
had to. He understands My Feelings, does what I ask without question, and Loves unconditionally. That's the best part of all.
So, go ahead and see what you can find out.
It's a great idea to want to share your friend with others in this way. I commend you for wanting to do that.
