I’m on disability, Is there a way that I can get the government to pay my property taxes?

Wednesday Feb 11, 2009

If I’m handicapped and on disability and my relative died (who used to pay the property taxes on the home i live in) who will pay my property taxes now? Am I just expected to pay for it out of my regular disability payments or can I also get the state or government to pay for my Property taxes in addition to my regular ssi disability payments?
I ask because my disability doesn't pay me no where near enough to cover my yearly property taxes which are about $3,000 per year.

The disability payments are to pay your bills and other living expenses with. There aren't programs for the government to also pay your property taxes. In some states though, there is a partial rebate on property tax that you might be eligible for - in PA you can be eligible for up to $650 if you are a senior citizen or disabled, and your income meets certain criteria.

Talk to the local taxing aurhority. Some may offer reduced rates for taxes, freeze the tax rate or allow you to postpone it until you sell.

If there are no tax reductions available to you, you might need to consider selling, and moving into a less expensive place.

Sorry, but the state expects you to pay your property taxes, and doesn't care where/ from whom you got the money in the past. One of the obligations of home ownership is paying property taxes. The amount of tax due is not dependent upon your disability, but upon the property valuation. If you can't pay your taxes, maybe you need to get a roommate, rent out a bedroom and save the rent for the taxes? Otherwise, after not paying your taxes for a year, your home will be sold for back taxes. Why should the state or government pay for your property taxes? They already pay your disability as you've not worked enough to earn/receive social security and they provide you with services, so they expect to receive your contribution. No one has a RIGHT to home ownership, and many can't afford it. Make sure you are getting the deductions in your property tax which you are entitled to, Home owners' and Senior/Disabled exemptions or senior freeze. Different rules and programs in different states.

You may want to consider a reverse mortgage.

Here is another option. I am disabled and supplement my SSDI with a part time work at home job. I have been disabled for almost 2 years. It was hard to live with the fact that I would not go work again. I had a lot of questions and fears. How would I cover my mortgage payment and bills? Would I ever be productive again? Thankfully, I was introduced to the Social Security Administration’s, Ticket to Work Program. The Ticket to Work Program is an employment program for people with disabilities who are interested in going to work. The Program is part of The Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999. Legislators designed this program to remove many of the barriers that previously influenced people’s decisions about going to work and losing SSDI benefits.

This program really helped change my life. With the income limits changed, I was able to keep my Disability benefits, including COBRA, and work to learn a new skill. I can bring more income into the family, and earn my own self respect. For more information you need to check with the management company for the Ticket to Work, Maximus, phone 866-968-7842 and on the web http://www.yourtickettowork.com you can get all the particulars there to apply and start feeling like a productive person again. Especially now with all of the Work at Home positions available around the country, it is great time to participate in the program.

Once you have gotten all the particulars about your Ticket to Work in order, check out the immediate openings at http://www.jlodge.com/careers. J.
